The
Daggers will welcome the Nationwide Conference champions Barnet to the Glyn Hopkin Stadium for the final competitive game
of 2004/05 on Saturday.
Barnet have been worthy winners of the Conference this season having led from the point that the Daggers dropped the ball
in August and barring a wobble in February, being pretty much nailed on ever since. They clinched the title with a home win
over Halifax Town on the 9th of April and since have drawn twice against play off contenders Morecambe and Carlisle United,
Tuesday's game at home to Carlisle particularly controversial. Going in to the final games they are 13 points ahead of their
nearest rivals on what has been an extended lap of honour over the last two weeks.
In Giuliano Grazioli Barnet have the golden boot winner too, his 29 goals being a big factor in the championship and his
"swap deal" for Junior Agogo with Bristol Rovers two seasons back must now look the bargain of all time. Grazioli will be
looking to sign off from the Conference with 30 goals no doubt.
So many congratulations to Barnet and no doubt there will be a warm round of applause from what promises to be a decent
crowd on Saturday. Good luck for next season back in the Football League.
This will not be a game with no meaning though, particularly for Daggers manager John Still (right). Castigated by many at
Barnet for his role in Barnet's relegation season from the Football League he would love to send them off with a defeat. Three
points for the Daggers could also see them move up two places to finish 9th, which would be superb given the team has been
rebuilding this season, It would also mean the Daggers would extend what is already their best unbeaten run of the season
to seven games.
The Daggers have scored five against Barnet the last two times they have come to Victoria Road and go in to the game second
in the form table so a win is not beyond possibility.
They go in to this game without long term casualties Tim Cole and Mark Janney. Shane Blackett's season ended with ligament
damage in the game at Exeter City but no doubt he'll be back strong in the new season after proving what a good prospect he
is for the future. Otherwise the squad is all fit and will have been boosted by the news midweek that Tony Roberts (left)
has signed a new two year extension to his contract.
No doubt this will be a final game for the club for a couple of the squad with John Still looking to build further in the
close season. Most of the squad has been signed up through to the end of 2005/06 at least but Digger Dagger would not be too
surprised to see a couple move on anyway. Who though?
Most of the key issues in the Conference have now been settled but there are still two play off places up for grabs with
any two of five teams able to win them. The teams 4th and 5th, Morecambe and Aldershot Town have matters in their own hands
and wins at Tamworth and home to Scarborough respectively would see them through.
Any slip though would mean a win by Stevenage Borough, home to Leigh, Woking, away at Halifax, and Exeter who play at Carlisle
could see them sneak in to the mix. Good luck to (nearly) all the teams involved this weekend. Hopefully a last minute goal
by Leigh at Stevenage or similar will stuff their chances!
It is also a farewell for now at least to Leigh RMI, Farnborough Town and Forest Green Rovers, all confirmed as relegated
barring more close season shenanigans by the Conference management. Northwich Victoria and Gravesend & Northfleet were
both threatened with censure this week for ground issues raising the spectre of last seasons farce when none of the bottom
three in the table were actually relegated.
